    The United States said that US President George W. Bush accidentally misspoke when he called Taiwan a "country" and a "republic" in his recent speech and that the US stance on the Taiwan question has not changed, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said. Zhang also said the United States has officially clarified its stance on the Taiwan question, vowing not to describe Taiwan inaccurately again.

    CHENGDU

    New rule

    The provincial people's congress of Southwest China's Sichuan Province recently approved a regulation to better protect its attractions on the world heritage list. The regulation, which took effect on April 1, is the first in this regard in China.

    Sichuan has four tourism sites on the world cultural and natural heritage list, while China has 28 world heritage sites in all.

    Money theft

    The local customs house in the coastal Guangdong Province yesterday found a Chinese traveller carrying foreign currency that did not belong to her.

    The traveller hid 4 million yuan (US$480,000) in 11 foreign currencies while trying to flee from Shenzhen's Huanggang Customs House, officials said.

    Juncker talks

    Visiting Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker met yesterday with Shanghai Mayor Chen Liangyu. After extending his welcome to Juncker, Chen said that economic co-operation and exchanges between Shanghai and Luxembourg had progressed smoothly and co-operation in the financial sector and iron and steel industry would be further improved.

    Juncker expressed his admiration for Shanghai's rapid economic growth and said Luxembourg attached great importance to its relations with the city and hoped to further economic co-operation.

    BEIJING

    Caesarean sections high

    Medical experts in China warned that the high number of Caesarean sections could harm women and babies, People's Daily learned from a recent national health care conference.

    It is reported that 50 per cent to 70 per cent of babies were delivered by Caesarean in some areas while the World Health Organization said the rate should be below 15 per cent.

    Caesareans should be performed as a last resort to save the baby, experts said.

    Teenagers' printings welcomed

    "China's Qijiang Teenagers Printing and Teachers' Painting Exhibition" opened over the weekend in Paris.

    Qijiang, a county in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, is noted for peasantry printing, according to the Ministry of Culture.

    Pierre Rudy, deputy chairman of the European and Asian Development Association in France, officials from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and diplomats from the Chinese Embassy in France were all present at the ceremony.

    Rudy gave an emotional appeal at the opening, saying "Chinese teenagers' printing opens a window to this Chinese art form for French people."

    GUANGZHOU

    Road accident kills 9, injures 32

    A truck collided with a sleeper double-decker on Saturday morning in Fengkai County in South China's Guangdong Province, killing nine people and injuring 32.

    The accident occurred at 3 am on No 321 national highway. The cause is still under investigation.

    As the seven-day public holiday in early May is drawing near, the provincial public security department has issued a circular urging stricter supervision on the roads.

    HANGZHOU

    New mayor of east city elected

    Mao Linsheng was elected mayor of Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang Province, at the ongoing first session of the 10th Hangzhou People's Congress on Saturday morning.

    Mao, born in January 1954 and a graduate of the former Zhejiang Chemical Engineering Institute, was appointed acting mayor of Hangzhou by the Standing Committee of the Ninth Hangzhou People's Congress on January 18.

    GUANGZHOU

    3 die in storm

    Three workers were killed and at least three others were injured when a workshop at a plastic factory collapsed in a storm on Saturday morning in Dongguan in South China's Guangdong Province.

    According to the Guangzhou-based Northern Metropolitan Daily, the accident was caused by a strong wind that also lifted an iron roof off a neighbouring factory.

    Heavy investment for immigrants

    East China's Jiangxi Province will invest 1.5 billion yuan (US$180 million) in the construction of infrastructures for immigrants over the coming six years to make the life of the immigrants easier, who will move from their old homes to make room for the construction of reservoirs.

    An overall plan is being drafted by the provincial government to solve the problems in water supply, transportation, electricity, education and health for the 630,000 immigrants.
